Food on China’s High-Speed Trains: Bring Your Own or Buy on Board?

Yes—you can bring your own food on China’s high-speed trains. You can also buy boxed meals, snacks and drinks onboard, or order restaurant delivery through 12306 on eligible services. Plan to pay for food unless your ticket specifically includes a meal.

For a first trip, a packed meal or something bought before boarding is the simplest option. If you would rather travel light, ask the catering staff what is available. Delivery gives you another choice, but check payment and the ordering deadline before relying on it.

Bring food or buy on board?

Your plan When it makes sense Check before relying on it
Bring a packed meal or snacks You have dietary requirements, or just want to sit down and eat Ingredients, storage instructions and a container that will not leak
Buy food at the departure station You have time after security Shop queues and your boarding time; keep the purchase simple
Buy from the train trolley or dining car You want a meal without setting up an online order The available menu and price on your train
Order station-to-train delivery through 12306 Your service has participating restaurants and a suitable delivery stop The selected station, order cutoff, seat details and payment

What food is available on the train?

You can ask train staff about meals, snacks and drinks, or buy from a catering trolley. The dining car is generally around the middle of the train, but its position depends on the train formation. Ask which carriage to head for instead of walking through the whole train with your bags. See 12306’s dining guidance.

Ask to see the menu and price before choosing. 盒饭 (héfàn) means a boxed meal; a photo helps with the basic choice, but will not tell you every ingredient in the sauce.

Shanghai’s official guide lists cash and electronic payment for onboard purchases; carrying some RMB gives you an alternative if your phone payment fails. Onboard buying options.

How much does food cost on the train?

Prices vary by train and meal. As a reference, Kunming Railway announced budget boxed meals at RMB 15–36 on selected EMU routes in February 2025. This regional example is not a current nationwide menu; ask for the choices and prices on your service. Kunming Railway’s announcement.

Ask 有便宜一点的盒饭吗? (Yǒu piányi yìdiǎn de héfàn ma? — “Do you have a cheaper boxed meal?”) if the first option is above your budget. Compare the complete meal, including drinks, rather than assuming the first box on the trolley is the only choice.

For restaurant delivery, check the final order total and any delivery charge. If keeping the cost predictable matters most, buy food at a price you are comfortable with before boarding.

What food should you bring?

Choose something you can open on a small tray, eat without much mess and put away quickly. Keep packaging or labels if you need to check ingredients.

Food Why it is useful—or awkward What to check
Bread or a sandwich Easy to eat without balancing a bowl Fillings, milk, egg and storage instructions
Crackers or other packaged snacks Handy if a meal order falls through Allergens and whether it is enough for the journey
A freshly bought rice meal A proper lunch with little setup Meat, sauces and how soon it should be eaten
A salad or chilled sandwich Convenient if kept as directed Refrigeration needs; a train seat is not a fridge
Instant noodles Require hot water and careful handling of a full cup Strong smells in a shared carriage; another snack is usually simpler
Self-heating rice or hotpot The heating pack produces heat and steam Choose a meal that does not need a heating pack

Hot water does not mean every hot meal is a good choice. 12306 asks passengers to avoid strong-smelling food, naming instant noodles and durian, and advises against using self-heating meals onboard. That is dining guidance, not a blanket claim that all packaged noodles are forbidden in your bag. Railway dining advice.

Do not plug in your own travel kettle or rice cooker. Railway guidance says these appliances may be carried but cannot be used onboard. Electrical-appliance rules.

If your food is coming from overseas, check China’s entry requirements separately; permission to eat it on a train does not establish whether you can bring it through customs.

How to order 12306 food delivery

12306 shows the delivery options available for your train, including participating restaurants at selected stops. Choose a delivery station that your train reaches while you are still on board.

The basic flow is:

  1. Open the food-ordering section in Railway 12306 and enter your train details.
  2. Check the available delivery stations and restaurants.
  3. Select food, then enter or confirm the passenger, contact, carriage and seat details requested.
  4. Check the total, pay and look for confirmation in the meal order.

After boarding, the Railway 12306 QR code at the seat can also provide an ordering entry where available. Screens and choices can differ by service. Official ordering overview.

Before paying, check the cutoff and payment method:

  • Timing: For participating outside restaurants, ordering and cancellation normally close 60 minutes before scheduled departure from the delivery station; check the merchant’s cutoff. This is not necessarily 60 minutes before you board.
  • Payment: The agreement lists Alipay and WeChat. Ticket-payment options do not establish what works for meals.

These conditions come from the 12306 food-ordering agreement. Check the actual order screen for your trip. If you use an overseas phone number, check that the contact step accepts it before relying on delivery.

If your food order does not work out

What happened What to do next
Payment failed or you cannot tell whether it succeeded Check the meal order and payment history before trying again. Keep the order number or screenshot if you need help.
You missed the ordering cutoff Check onboard food or buy before boarding if time allows. Do not leave the train at an intermediate stop to chase a takeaway.
You changed or cancelled your train ticket Handle the meal separately: check its cancellation window and cancel it if eligible. Do not assume it moved to your new train.
You cannot find your delivery Show staff the order confirmation, delivery station, carriage and seat. Use the support contact shown in the order if it remains unresolved.
No suitable meal is available Use the food you brought, or choose an option whose ingredients you can confirm. Do not leave dietary checks until after paying.

For a refund, check the conditions in your meal order or contact its support team.

Halal, vegetarian and allergy needs

12306 says its EMU catering includes halal options; ask staff about the specific service and availability. Do not make a particular meal your only plan until it is confirmed. For food before the journey, our halal restaurant guide explains how to look for 清真 and check a restaurant.

For vegetarian food, a rice-and-vegetables picture is a starting point. Ask about meat, stock and cooking fat. For an allergy, check the ingredients and preparation details you need; “no pork,” “vegetarian” and “halal” do not answer allergen questions. Our Chinese food allergen guide has more specific checks.

If suitable food cannot be confirmed, a meal you have checked beforehand is the practical fallback. Keep perishable food according to its storage instructions rather than saving it warm for later in the journey.

Plan food around your departure time

The useful question is not just how long the train takes. Include the journey to the station and the time between arrival and your next meal. A short train ride can still swallow most of lunchtime.

Your journey A simple food plan
Around two hours, between meals Eat before leaving, then carry water and a snack. No need to arrange delivery just for the sake of it.
Three to five hours, crossing lunch or dinner Plan one meal: buy before boarding, check onboard choices or confirm a delivery order. Keep a snack in reserve.
A longer trip covering two mealtimes Arrange the first meal and decide how you will get the second. Avoid relying on a chilled takeaway kept at your seat all day.
An early departure Buy suitable breakfast food the evening before. Check storage instructions, and do not make a station café your only option.

If you are travelling with children, keep a familiar snack handy rather than tying their next meal to a delivery stop.

Put your food, water and tissues in a bag you can reach from your seat. If you ordered delivery, keep the order confirmation handy and recheck the carriage and seat. Lunch is much easier when it does not involve opening a suitcase in the aisle.
